    Accepting the recommendations made by the Supreme Court collegium, the President of India has notified the appointment of nine Judges including three women and one lawyer to the Supreme Court of India.

    The new Judges are (in the order of names recommended by the Supreme Court collegium)

    1. Mr. Justice A.S. Oka, Chief Justice, Karnataka High Court

    2. Mr. Justice Vikram Nath, Chief Justice, Gujarat High Court

    3. Mr. Justice J.K. Maheshwari, Chief Justice, Sikkim High Court

    4. Ms. Justice Hima Kohli, Chief Justice, Telangana High Court

    5. Mrs. Justice B.V. Nagarathna, Judge, Karnataka High Court

    6. Mr. Justice C.T. Ravikumar, Judge, Kerala High Court

    7. Mr. Justice M.M. Sundresh, Judge, Madras High Court

    8. Ms. Justice Bela M. Trivedi, Judge, Gujarat High Court,

    9. Mr. P.S. Narasimha, Senior Advocate.

    It is for the first time in the History of India three women Judges are appointed to the Supreme Court in one go.

    The Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Chief Justice NV Ramana Justices U U Lalit, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud, and L Nageswara Rao on August 19 recommended the Nine names for elevation to the Supreme Court.

    As per the seniority, Justice B V Nagarathna is in the line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India (CJI) in September 2027.

    Appointments to Supreme Court after nearly two years

    It was in September 2019 that appointments of judges to the Supreme Court were made. The Supreme Court at present working with 24 judges out of a sanctioned strength of 34. With these nine appointments, the working strength of the Court will rise to 33 judges, with one vacancy remaining.
