RG Kar Rape-Murder Case Trial Likely To Be Over In One Month, Says Supreme Court

The trial in the case relating to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata is likely to be over within a month, observed the Supreme Court, after taking note of the latest status report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).The Court noted that the trial is being conducted on a day-to-day basis from Monday to Thursday at the Special CBI Court at Sealdah and that the statements of 43 witnesses have been recorded. A total of 81 witnesses are to be examined from the prosecution side.A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar recorded these observations in the order passed in the suo motu case taken over the rape-murder case.Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, for the CBI, informed the bench that the issue regarding financial irregularities in the RG Kar hospital was separately investigated and a chargesheet has been filed. Sanction from the State Government for prosecution in that case is awaited since the accused persons are public servants, the SG added.Advocate Vrinda Grover, for the parents of the victim, submitted that they are hoping that the CBI would file a supplementary chargesheet in the rape-murder case to implicate those who were allegedly involved in covering up the crime.The Court also noted that the National Task Force- which was constituted to give recommendations to enhance the security cover for health professionals- has submitted its report. It asked the States and Union Territories to give their responses to the NTF recommendations. The NTF has been asked to give its final report within 12 weeks from today. The Court will consider the matter next on March 17. If there is any delay in the trial, parties are at liberty to mention the matter.The Court also asked the AIIMS to consider a plea raised by certain doctors to not consider the period of their protest as abstention from duty in terms of the relief earlier granted by the Supreme Court.The body of the post-graduate trainee doctor was found in the R.G. Kar Hospital's seminar room on August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the next day in this connection.On August 13, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation, after expressing lack of satisfaction with the Kolkata Police. On August 19, the Supreme Court took a suo motu case over the incident.
