SCBA Seeks Ban On Advocates Making Reels & Taking Selfies In Court Premises

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has passed a resolution recommending strict action against advocates engaging in videography, “reel-making,” and other forms of social media content creation within the Supreme Court premises. SCBA's letter addressed to the Supreme Court's Secretary General stated that unregulated videography and social media activities by lawyers not only erode the dignity of the institution but also amount to indirect solicitation and advertisement, both of which are prohibited under professional ethics. The SCBA has proposed the issuance of clear guidelines banning advocates from filming, recording, taking selfies, or creating reels inside courtrooms, corridors, lobbies, and other high-security zones of the Court, except with prior permission from authorities. The Association also called for prominent signage across the Court complex to reinforce the prohibition. To ensure compliance, the resolution suggests that police personnel be deputed for monitoring. It also lays down a disciplinary framework, including warning letters and suspension of SCBA membership, against advocates found violating the ban. Further, the Association may escalate such misconduct to the respective State Bar Councils for appropriate action. In a bid to create awareness, the SCBA has proposed routine workshops and sensitisation campaigns under the guidance of senior members of the Bar, particularly aimed at educating younger lawyers about the ethical and professional concerns around social media use within court premises. Condemning the practice, the SCBA's Executive Committee emphasised that such measures are essential to preserve the dignity and decorum of the Court.Recently, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association had written to the CJI raisiing similar concerns.Click here to read/download the resolution
