A Supreme Court bench comprising Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.S. Bopanna sat till 6.40 pm today, which is way past the regular court sitting hours.

The regular court hours at the Supreme Court are 10.30 am to 4pm. Today, the bench was hearing certain hearing matters, which went beyond the regular hours.

This comes after Justice Chandrachud's remark on August 12, 2022, when he had talked about extra sittings in the courtroom and stated that after the hearings in the court room, the judges usually had to continue working in the chambers and such work extended till late in the night too at times.

Recently, a bench led by Justice UU Lalit (the next Chief Justice of India) had done an experimental sitting by starting the session at 9.30 AM, an hour before the regular work times. "If our children can go to school at 7 AM, why can't judges come to court at 9?", Justice Lalit had orally remarked.
