A plea has been filed before the Supreme Court challenging Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Maharashtra, alleging that about 33% voters have been deleted and over 1 crore voters have been struck off on the ground of 'logical discrepancy'.
When the matter was mentioned on Thursday (October 15) before a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, praying for listing thereof alongwith a plea filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and various others challenging SIR, the CJI declined.
The CJI also orally indicated that the Court wishes to tackle SIR issues state-wise, not in a generalized manner.
Notably, various petitions have been filed before the Supreme Court challenging SIR, which include one filed by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders [Mallikarjun Kharge, Saugata Roy (Trinamool Congress-Mamata Banerjee), Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Tejashwi Prasad Yadav (RJD), Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena UBT), MA Baby (CPI(M)), D Raja (CPI), Mahua Majhi (JMM), Supriya Sule (NCP Sharad Pawar) and ET Muhammed Basheer (IUML)].
On Wednesday Lok Sabha MP and AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi approached the Supreme Court seeking review of the Bihar SIR judgment which upheld the legality of Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
