Supreme Court Stays Arrest Of Actor Shreyas Talpade In Cheating Cases

The Supreme Court on Monday granted interim protection to actor Shreyas Talpade from arrest in cases registered in various states in connection with alleged financial crime committed by a cooperative society accused of defrauding investors.A bench of Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice K.V. Viswanathan issued notice to respondents to file their response/counter affidavit and directed that in the meantime no coercive steps shall be taken against him. The matter has been listed on August 29 for further consideration.It is alleged that Talpade promoted the co-operative society as its brand ambassador and that his endorsement induced members of the public to invest in the society's financial schemes.Talpade has approached the Court in the present writ petition seeking protection from coercive action in multiple FIRs filed across states for criminal breach of trust and cheating. He is facing allegations under Sections 316(2) and 318(4) of the BNS, 2023 in Haryana, and Sections 409, 420, and 419 of the IPC in FIRs registered in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.He has also sought transfer and consolidation of all such FIRs with the FIR registered at Gomti Nagar Police Station, Lucknow, which he states is the first known FIR on the issue. He also sought anticipatory bail or protection from coercive steps in all such proceedings.The allegations pertain to the activities of Human Welfare Credit and Thrift Co-operative Society Limited (HWC), which forms part of the SAGA Group of societies.Talpade has claimed he was invited by the SAGA Group to attend annual events in 2018, 2019 and 2022 as a guest celebrity in a limited and non-commercial capacity, which helped him gain professional visibility and secure film assignments. He stated that the events were professional engagements and that he had no prior or ongoing association with the group or its cooperative societies, including Human Welfare Credit and Thrift Co-operative Society Limited. Talpade has claimed that the FIRs have been registered against him without specific allegations or material evidence.
