    The Supreme Court on Monday announced that it was suspending the judicial business today as a mark of respect for Justice Mohan M Shantanagoudar, who passed away on April 24.

    All matters which were listed today will be taken up tomorrow.

    The full court observed two minutes silence to condole the demise of Justice Shantanagoudar.

    "We are deeply saddened by untimely demise of our brother who passed away in late evening hours of April 24th. As mark of respect in memory of the departed soul, we observe a two minute silence SupremeCourt", Chief Justice Ramana said.

    The High Courts of Allahabad, Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh are closed today to mourn the death of Justice Shantanagoudar. The subordinate courts of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana are also remaining closed today on this count.

    Expressing grief at the passing away of Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar, newly sworn-in CJI Ramana said yesterday :

    "I was hoping for his speedy and complete recovery and his return to the Bench at the earliest. The news of his passing has come as a rude shock. I have lost a valued colleague.In the last four years of my association with him in the Supreme Court, I have benefitted immensely from his amazing legal acumen".

    The Chief Justice of India spoke to the son of Justice Shantanagoudar and offered condolences to the bereaved family on his own behalf and on behalf of the Brother and Sister Judges of the Supreme Court.

    Justice Ramana has shared the bench with Justice Shantanagoudar for a long time to deal with several important cases.

    It was on Saturday(April 24) night that Justice Shantanagoudar breathed his last at a private hospital in Gurugram, succumbing to prolonged illness.

    He was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2017 and had a term till May 5, 2023. Before elevation to the Supreme Court, Justice Shantanagoudar was the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court. His parent High Court was Karnataka High Court.
