Supreme Court To Hear Petitions Challenging SIR Of Electoral Rolls On November 11

The Supreme Court on Friday fixed November 11 for hearing the petitions challenging the Election Commission of India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in several states.Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), mentioned the matter before a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, requesting that it be heard on Monday. ADR had filed the petition challenging the Bihar SIR exercise.He highlighted that SIR has started for the rest of the country and contended that the Election Commission is not accepting Aadhaar card for inclusion in the electoral roll.“SIR has started, it has assumed some urgency now, in the rest of the country. They said they will accept Aadhaar, they are still not accepting it. Very urgent issue, it goes to the root of our democracy”, he said.In response, Justice Kant said, “We will start on 11th November.”The case concerns petitions challenging the legality of the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of the Bihar electoral rolls, during which the petitioners alleged large-scale exclusions and irregularities. The petitioners have also questioned the ECI's power to conduct SIR.The Court has previously issued several directions, including allowing the use of Aadhaar as one of the documents for inclusion in the voters' list and directing publication of details of excluded voters.On the last date of hearing, October 16, the Court had adjourned the matter after noting the Election Commission's submission that it was in the process of publishing the final list of voters in Bihar.During that hearing, Bhushan had urged the bench to direct the Election Commission to publish the names added and deleted in the final list of voters.
