Expedite Release Of Undertrials, Provide Them Legal Aid : Prime Minister Urges District Legal Services Authorities

Underscoring the issue of undertrials who remain incarcerated for want of legal aid, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the District Legal Services Authorities to expedite the release of undertrials by using their position in the District Level Undertrial Review Committees. Speaking at the 1st First Meeting of the All India District Legal Services Authority, organised by the National Legal Services Authority, the PM said that the time which was chosen for the inauguration of this meet was not only apt but also appropriate from a historical perspective as India was soon going to celebrate its 75th year of Independence. Ease of Justice is as Important as Ease of Doing Business and Ease of Living: PM Laying emphasis on the ease of justice, the PM said that ease of justice is as important as ease of doing business and ease of living and NLSA & DLSA can play a crucial role in this regard. While referring to Article 39A which deals with legal aid, the PM said that people's faith has been instilled in our judiciary in such a manner that every ordinary person in our country believes that the doors of judiciary are always open for him even if there is no one to listen to his problems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also said that during the last 8 years, the government has been working relentlessly for strengthening the judicial infrastructure and justice delivery mechanism and has also approved a sum of Rupees 9000 crores for the same. 1 Crore Cases By District Courts & 60 Lakh Cases In High Court's & Supreme Court Have Been Heard Through VC: PM He also lauded the judiciary for hearing cases through virtual conferencing during CoVID. "By way of e-Court mission, the virtual courts were started and even for offenses like traffic violation, the courts have already started to function. In district courts, more than 1 crore cases have been heard by way of video conferencing and 60 lakh cases have been heard by High Courts & Supreme Court through VCs & the platform that we had adopted during CoVID has been accepted in daily functioning of the court too," the PM said. Stressing on technology playing a quintessential role in making the citizens aware of their rights and duties under the Constitution, the PM also suggested adopting next generation technologies for development of people.
