The Allahabad High Court, acting on its own motion, has ordered the Inspector General of Police of the Meerut Zone to investigate a honey-trap and blackmail racket operating in the area.
A bench of Justice JJ Munir and Justice Tarun Saxena noted that the presence of such a gang, which allegedly blackmails innocent people by utilizing women to spring a honey-trap, discloses a "pernicious state of affairs in society".
The bench sternly added that if offences like these are permitted to continue, it would become difficult to live in a decent world.
The Court was essentially dealing with a quashing plea filed by a woman and four other persons who had been accused of honey-trapping the informant.
As per the allegations, the first petitioner contacted the informant and called him to a hotel in Bijnor, where they had carnal relations. A video of the act was deceitfully captured, after which the petitioners allegedly began blackmailing the informant, demanding ₹10 lakh.
The informant was then called to a location where two policemen (petitioners 4 and 5) were present in connivance with the main accused. The policemen reportedly showed him the video and demanded the money.
However, the informant did not part with the cash and instead reported the case to the police.
Treating this as a "very serious matter", the High Court directed the Inspector General to alert all district police chiefs in the Meerut zone to maintain strict vigil.
The Court also directed the Registrar of Compliance to communicate the order to the Director General of Police in Lucknow, the Inspector General of Police in the Meerut Zone and the Additional Chief Secretary of Home in Uttar Pradesh.
The petition was dismissed as withdrawn.
