Student Provisionally Permitted To Appear In Board Exams Despite Low Attendance Seeks Gujarat High Court's Intervention To Sit For Supplementary Exam

Following directives from the Gujarat High Court, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) disclosed the results of a Class 10 student from Gandhinagar's Delhi Public School on Tuesday who was permitted to sit for the Board exams on the court's order despite being initially deemed ineligible due to insufficient attendance. The result had been placed in a sealed cover earlier.The court was informed that the student had not cleared two of his exams—Maths and Computer Applications.The petitioner's counsel requested the court to allow the student to appear for the supplementary exams.In response, the counsel for CBSE informed the court that the supplementary exams are scheduled for July, although the notification for these exams has not yet been issued. It was further submitted that the process for issuing the notification would be undertaken in due course by the CBSE.The single bench has now referred the matter to the regular bench for further consideration.Justice D. M. Desai, presiding over the case, had ordered CBSE in the previous hearing on May 15 to reveal the student's result on an affidavit. The court emphasized that it would later decide on the student's eligibility and the validity of his result after a full hearing on merits.The student had been barred from taking the final exams as he failed to meet the mandatory 60% attendance requirement. He missed school from July 2023 to January 2024 allegedly due to severe depression.His father approached the High Court in February, requesting the court to instruct CBSE to condone the student's absence and permit him to take the exams.On February 14, the High Court allowed the student to sit for the exams and directed CBSE to seal his result until the matter could be fully heard. After the board declared results on May 13, the student's father sought the court's intervention to unseal and release his son's result.
