MP High Court Directs Removal Of Stray Dogs From Prominent Tourist Places In Indore

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the Indore Municipal Corporation to identify prominent tourist places in the city and conduct a drive for the removal of stray dogs as a 'top priority' in these places. The corporation was also directed to file an affidavit regarding the data of the sterilisation of stray dogs, which an affidavit of the senior officer of the Corporation shall support.Referring to the Supreme Court's decision in the Suo Motu Petition titled CITY HOUNDED BY STRAYS, KIDS PAY PRICE", the division bench of Justice Vijay Kumar Shukla and Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi directed; "we direct the Indore Municipal Corporation to comply with the direction which have been reproduced hereinabove and also the directions given by Apex Court which has been referred in our order dated 25.11.2025. In order to ensure proper compliance of the directions, we direct that Commissioner, Municipal Corporation will hold the meeting of concerned officers of the Corporation and also to prepare an action plain in this regard. The meeting shall be fixed within 10 days from today. In addition to that, the Municipal Corporation shall also identify the prominent public places including tourist places of Indore city i.e. Chhappan Dukan andSarafa, etc. and conduct a drive for removal of stray dogs on top priority on the said places and before the next date, the Corporation will file an action report in this regard with datas of sterlization of stray dogs, which shall be supported by an affidavit of the senior officer of the Corporation. If we find that action report is not satisfactory, we may direct personal appearance of the Commissioner,Municipal Corporation,Indore". The court passed the said directions in a PIL seeking direction to remove livestock, including cattle, sheep and goats, from the city limits to protect the greenery. The issue of stray dogs was also raised in this petition. Earlier, the court had asked the State to apprise it about the action taken by the Corporation with regard to the said issue. In the hearing, the counsel for the State submitted that certain measures were taken by the Corporation with regard to the issue of cattle and stray dogs. It was submitted that the Corporation regularly engages in the removal of stray cattle from the city. The counsel for the intervenors, however, argued 'the whole city is facing a menace because of the stray dogs and a number of dog biting cases are reported'. Considering the aforesaid arguments, the court directed the Municipal Corporation to comply with the directions of the Supreme Court in the suo motu petition (supra).
