The Madras High Court, on Friday (October 30), issued notice on a plea seeking inquiry into the antecedents of Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) spokesperson and journalist Saurav Das.

The plea also seeks to block his social media handles for allegedly posting derogatory statements against the judiciary and judges of the Supreme Court.

The bench of Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan issued notice to the respondents, including the Regional Passport Officer (Chennai), the Chairperson (UIDAI), the Union Home Ministry, the Foreign Secretary (Ministry of External Affairs), the Secretary (Ministry of Law and Justice), the Secretary (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology), and Grievance Officers of X (previously Twitter) and Instagram.

The court issued notice, returnable in 6 weeks and adjourned the hearing.

The plea, filed by Ganesh Kumar of Kanchipuram District, has sought directions to the Government to conduct a detailed, thorough, and fair probe pertaining to the background of the individuals and to take necessary action against Saurav Das by cancelling his passport and Aadhaar Card.

The plea also seeks directions to the MeitY to block Saurav's Instagram and Twitter handles and to prevent him from making any derogatory statements against the Judiciary and Judges of the Supreme Court.

When the matter was taken up on Friday, Advocate B Jagannath, appearing for the petitioner, argued that he has sought an enquiry into Saurav's antecedents. He argued that Saurav had been making derogatory statements against the judiciary.

"The manner in which he speaks about the judiciary, this is not the way to speak. I had given a complaint to the authorities, but no action had been taken. So I'm filing this petition," Jagannath said.

The court has now issued notice.
