North Delhi Municipal Corporation has informed the Delhi High Court that the Delhi Government has not released its share of salaries payable to the sanitation workers, health workers, and doctors who are on COVID duty.
The municipal body further informed the Division Bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Subramonium Prasad that due to the order of the Supreme Court in Dr Arushi Jain v. Union of India, North DMC has to prioritise the salaries of sanitation workers and health workers over that of teachers from the corpus provided by the Delhi Government.
The said information has been provided in a suo moto matter concerning the payment of salaries to teachers who are working in the schools run by North DMC.
In addition to this, North DMC submitted that the salary of all the teachers employed by the Nr.DMC in the schools being run by it has been paid for the months of March and April, 2020
Moreover, the salary of the teachers who are on COVID duty, numbering 5406 has been released on 14.07.2020. It was further submitted that the salaries of the remaining teachers for the month of April, 2020 would be released by the end of July, 2020.
Ms Mini Pushkarna, who appeared for the North DMC, also informed the court that the body would be moving an application in a pending suo moto matter before the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice DN Patel seeking a direction to be issued to the Delhi Government to provide salaries for sanitation and health workers on COVID duty.
In light of these submissions, the court directed both the Delhi Government and the North DMC to file updated status reports by July 31.
The court will next take up this matter on August 05.
