The Delhi High Court has directed the Internet Service Providers to block a list of 118 'rogue websites' which are illegally streaming Disney cartoons.

The Single Bench of Justice Rajiv Shakdher noted that if the Plaintiffs are not protected, as prayed for, irreparable damage would be caused to their commercial and statutory interest.

The order has come in a suit filed by Disney claiming that a total of 118 rogue websites are indulging in digital piracy by illegally streaming content in which Disney holds a copyright.

Apart from these websites, Disney also impleaded the Internet Service Providers as well as the Department of Telecommunication, Ministry of Electronics & IT to the present suit in order to ensure that these websites are blocked from showing the copyrighted content without a licence.

While noting that the balance of convenience lies in the favour of the Plaintiff, the court passed the following directions:

    1. rogue websites are restrained from, in any manner, hosting, streamlining, reproducing, distributing, making available to the public and/or communicating to the public or facilitating the same on their websites through the internet in any manner whatsoever, any cinematograph work, content, programme and show in which the plaintiffs have copyright.
    2. DoT shall issue directions and call upon ISPs to block access to these websites

The court will next take up this matter on September 01.
