On 17th January, the Bar Council of Delhi held a meeting, presided over by Chairman Mr. K.C. Mittal, and issued notice to Advocate A.P. Singh, counsel for Pawan Kumar Gupta who is one of the accused in the 2012 Nirbhaya case.

Convict Pawan Kumar Gupta had moved a plea in the Delhi High Court, claiming to be a juvenile during the commission of the heinous rape case that shook the nation's conscience. Dismissing the plea, Justice Suresh Kumar Kait also noted the failure of A.P. Singh to appear for Gupta and referred the matter to the Bar Council of Delhi.

Thereby, vide Order dated 19.12.2019 in the case of Mr. Pawan Kumar Gupta v. The State, Justice Kait directed the Bar Council of Delhi to take necessary action against Singh. A fine of Rs. 25,000 had also been imposed on Singh for failing to appear in court despite several communications.

In pursuance of order, Singh has been directed by the BCD to file his reply within two weeks from date of receipt of the notice. Additionally, the Registrar General of the Delhi HC has also been requested to supply a copy of the Vakalatnama filed in the Pawan Kumar Gupta case.

The matter will now come up before the BCD on 28.02.2020.
