“The General Body expressed its serious concern over the increasing incidents of attacks and intimidation against advocates and their family members in connection with the lawful discharge of their professional duties. The General Body unanimously resolved to take all necessary steps for the immediate enactment and implementation of an effective Lawyers Protection Act in the State of Kerala,” states the KHCAA notification issued pursuant to the meeting.

In the meeting, it was also decided that a joint meeting of all the Presidents and Secretaries of all Bar Associations in the State would be convened at the earliest for initiating a unified effort for enacting the law.

The Executive Committee of the KHCAA has been authorized to constitute a five-member committee to spearhead the initiative. This committee would be taking the steps for drafting the proposed legislation, in addition to holding discussions with the government and other competent authorities, coordinating with the other Bar Associations for enacting and implementing the law at the earliest.

KHCAA Condemns Attack, Offers Assistance To Victim's Family

The General Body has unanimously and unequivocally condemned the attack committed against the lawyer's family members for merely discharging his professional duty.

“Such acts constitute a serious threat not merely to an individual advocate, but to the independence of the legal profession and the administration of justice itself.”

The General Body has also resolved to extend all possible assistance and support required by the victim advocate and family members.
