    The Supreme Court Collegium on Wednesday recommended that Justice Amit Sharma, Additional Judge of Delhi High Court, be made a permanent judge against an existing vacancy.

    “Having regard to all the relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Shri Justice Amit Sharma, Additional Judge, is suitable for being appointed as a Permanent Judge of the High Court of Delhi,” reads a statement released by Collegium today.

    The statement adds that the Delhi High Court’s Collegium on January 09 unanimously recommended name of Justice Amit Sharma to be appointed as a permanent judge of the court.

    “In order to ascertain the fitness and suitability of Shri Justice Amit Sharma, for being appointed as a Permanent Judge, consultation was held with a view to ascertain his suitability for elevation in terms of the Memorandum of Procedure, with Judges of the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the High Court of Delhi,” it said.

    It further states that in order assess merit and suitability of Justice Sharma for his appointment as a Permanent Judge, the Collegium scrutinized and evaluated the material placed on record “including the observations made by the Department of Justice in the file as well as the report of the Judgment Evaluation Committee.”

    “In view of the above, the Collegium resolves to recommend that Shri Justice Amit Sharma, Additional Judge, be appointed as a Permanent Judge of the High Court of Delhi against an existing vacancy,” the statement reads.

    On May 31, 2022, Central Government had notified the appointment of Justice Amit Sharma, who was practicing as a lawyer earlier, to be appointed as Additional Judge of Delhi High Court. He took oath on June 01, 2022.

    His name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation as judges of the Delhi High Court in November 2021.
