Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined the request of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, for a meeting tomorrow to discuss issues relating to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

As per sources, in his reply to the official email of the Leaders of Opposition, the CJI expressed that such a meeting would be inappropriate as the issues sought to be raised are already sub judice before the Supreme Court.

It is also understood that the CJI has conveyed that under the constitutional scheme, the Supreme Court cannot interfere with the functioning of the executive on its administrative side. However, it was clarified that the leaders are free to approach the Court on its judicial side.

The opposition leaders were also informed that any petition filed by any opposition member can be heard along with the similar matters relating to the SIR exercise which are already listed for hearing before the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Earlier today, Rahul Gandhi announced that the opposition parties would march to the Supreme Court tomorrow and will present a memorandum to the CJI seeking the rollback of the SIR and resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. Mallikarjun Kharge also announced the same plan, and stated that they have scheduled a meeting with the CJI between 4 PM and 5PM tomorrow.

It may be relevant to note that a bench led by CJI Surya Kant had, in May 2026, upheld the validity of the power of the Election Commission of India to conduct the SIR. The CJI's bench is also seized of petitions challenging the various decisions of the CEC which are alleged to have been taken without the concurrence of the other Election Commissioners.
