New Roster To Be Implemented In Supreme Court From July 1; 5 Senior Judges To Hear PILs [Read Roster]
As the Supreme Court reopens after summer recess on July 1, a new roster will be implemented.
Jurisdiction over Letter Petitions and Public Interest Litigation (PIL) have now been now allocated to Benches headed by the five senior-most judges of the Supreme Court.
PIL matters will now be heard by the Benches headed by CJI Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde, NV Ramana, Arun Mishra and RF Nariman. Earlier, the bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur used to deal with PILs, in addition to the bench headed by CJI.
Another notable change is that election matters, which were vested exclusively with the Bench headed by the CJI, will now be shared with the Bench headed by Justice Bobde.
Also, Justices MM Shantanagoudar and Abdul Nazeer will start heading Benches as per the new roster.
The subject wise roster system was introduced by former CJI Dipak Misra in February 2018, in the backdrop of 'master of roster' controversy which erupted after the press conference by four senior judges, who alleged that the CJI was selectively assigning cases to benches of preferences, ignoring seniority of judges
The system was continued by CJI Gogoi after he assumed office last October.
