Supreme Court Back To 'Original Avatar' : Glass Panels In Corridors Removed; Website Uses Old Logo

The Supreme Court has removed the glass panels installed in its corridors, following a decision taken by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai to restore the Court to its "original avatar."The glass panels were erected last year during the term of the then Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for the purpose of centralised air-conditionining. However, in December last year, the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association, after the retirement of CJI Chandrachud, requested the next CJI Sanjiv Khanna to remove the glass panels, saying that it had reduced the space in the corridors, causing inconvenience to the lawyers and litigants."The space in the corridors has reduced drastically, making it difficult for members of the bar, registered clerks, interns and litigants to move around, especially during the peak hours. This has led to delays in Court proceedings and increased frustration among all the stake holders in the justice delivery process. Needless to add that the availability of fresh air and sunshine has been severely restricted due to these additions," the SCAORA had said. Though CJI Khanna did not take any action to remove them, CJI BR Gavai, soon after assuming office, publicly said that they will be removed.On May 23, while speaking at the farewell function of Justice AS Oka, CJI Gavai said that a decision has been made to remove the glass partition. Supreme Court website restores original logoThe Supreme Court has also restored its traditional emblem on its official website, replacing the blue insignia introduced during its 75th anniversary celebrations in September 2024.The blue insignia, launched during the tenure of former CJI, Justice DY Chandrachud, featured a blue background with the Ashoka Chakra, the Supreme Court building, and the Constitution of India, along with the motto "Yato Dharmastato Jayah" inscribed in Devanagari script.The official website of the Supreme Court, under the administration of the present CJI, Justice BR Gavai, now reflects the original logo entailing the Ashoka Chakra upon the National Emblem of India. The new logo was unveiled by President Droupadi Murmu, along with a flag for the Supreme Court, in September 2024 to commemorate its 75th year.The new flag and the insignia, symbolizing justice and democracy, were conceptualised by the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi. However, in October 2024, the Executive Committee of the Supreme Court Bar Association passed a resolution objecting to the 'unilateral' changes made to the emblem of the Supreme Court without consulting the members of the Bar."We are equal stakeholders in the administration of justice but these changes when proposed, were never brought to our attention. We are totally clueless on the rationale behind these changes," the resolution read.The causelists published by the Court, however, continue to use the new logo.
